Obituary – Glen O. Duke

Glen O. Duke, age 81, of Owenton, KY passed away Wednesday, February 19th at his home surrounded by his family and friends.

Born March 2, 1932, in Bellefontaine, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Charles Tinsley and Eunice Castle Duke. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Charles Tanner Duke and his brothers, Hilton, Ralph, George and Fred Allen Duke. Glen served his country during the Korean Conflict, in the United States Navy and was the former Commander for the VFW Post 3119. Additionally, he was a retired professional land surveyor, farmer, developer, Kentucky Colonel and attended Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Glen is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eleanor “Ellie” Pierson Duke; his sons, Fred Pierson (Millie) Duke of Lexington, KY and David Glen (Catherine) Duke of Frankfort, Ky; his brother, Paul Duke of Eupora; three grandchildren, Mason Blair Duke, Logan Glen Duke and Jessica Marie Wilson and his great granddaughter, Naomi June West.

McDonald & New Funeral Homes are in charge of arrangements. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 25, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dale Adkins officiating.

God saw him getting tired, a cure not meant to be, so he wrapped his arms around him and whispered, “come to me.”

Mr. Thomas E. “Toy” Brown, 82, retired Machinist, died 3/5/2014 at the North Ms. Medical Center in Eupora, Ms. Funeral Services were held 2:00PM Saturday 3/8/14 at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Clarkson Cemetery in Webster County. Bro. Danny Woods officiated. Mr. Brown was an Army veteran serving as a Military Policeman. He is survived by a daughter; Gwen (Dall) Lindsey, Russellville, Al., a step daughter; Teresa (Joseph) Perniciaro, Bay St. Louis, Ms., a sister; Rebekah Brown Clemons, Pontotoc, Ms., a grandson; a step granddaughter, two great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; Bobbie Jo Brown, a sister; Mary Jo Williams, and a niece; Debbie Swords. Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora was in charge of all arrangements.

Services for Shirley Ann Johnson, 50, of Eupora March 8, 2014 at Mount Union Baptist Church in Eupora with the Rev. Andrew Windrick officiating. Burial was in Churchill Cemetery.

She was born Nov. 16, 1963, to the late Ervin “Dee” and Susie Mae Coffey Johnson. A homemaker, Mrs. Johnson attended Eupora High School and was a Baptist. She died March 1, 2014, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.

Survivors include three sons, Anthony T. Johnson, Antionne J. Johnson and Brandon J. Johnson; two sisters, Frances L. Johnson and Sandra K. Purnell; and two brothers, James E. Johnson and Lenwood Johnson, all of Eupora.

Obituary – Robert Allen Anderson Sr.

Services for Robert Allen Anderson Sr., 77, of Ackerman were March 11, 2014, at South Union Methodist Church near Ackerman with the Rev. Bryan Carrubba officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

He was born Nov. 23, 1936, in Louisiana. Mr. Anderson was a retired business owner and railroad engineer, and member of South Union Methodist Church. He died March 8, 2014, at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Columbus.

Survivors include three sons, David Anderson of Cove Springs, Fla., James Anderson of Meridian and Robert Anderson Jr. of Ackerman; a daughter, Deborah Silvira of Jackson; a sister, Wanda Sue Warren of Pensacola, Fla.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the South Union Methodist Church Cemetery Fund.

Rosetta Draine

Services for Rosetta Taylor Draine, 92, of Eupora were March 15, 2014, at Mount Union Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Nelson Forrest officiating. Burial was in Piney Jordan Cemetery near Eupora.

She was born Nov. 27, 1921. Mrs. Draine died March 9, 2014 at North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora.

Survivors include three sons, Delmar Draine Jr., George A. Draine and Joe W. Draine; three daughters, Shirley R. Wise, Carrie Levy and Carolyn D. Brown; three brothers, John H. Taylor, James E. Taylor and Edward L. Taylor; three sisters, Mary A. Frazier, Betty L. Sanders and Helen Graham: 25 grandchildren, 90 great-grandchildren and a host of great-great-grandchildren.

Roberts and Sons Mortuary of Eupora was in charge of arrangements.

 

Ella Mae McGary

Services for Ella Mae McGary, 91, of Eupora were March 12, 2014, at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Willy Weddle officiating. Burial was in West Shady Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. McGary was a homemaker and member of West Shady Grove Baptist Church. She died March 9, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora.

Survivors include three daughters, Ethelene Ingram of Wilsonville, Ala., Joyce Pepper of Pepper Town and Sheila Jenkins of Pontotoc; two sons, Earl “Pete” McGary of Quitman and Jimmy Clyde McGary of Eupora; four sisters, Mary Ann Mitchell of Middleton, Pa., Lucille Caffey of Grenada, Louise McGary of McAdams and Earline Hodges of Eupora; a brother, Jimmy Orr of Eupora; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Cam Avery, Dale Avery, Steve Carver, Gary Ingram, Donny Jenkins, Leon Long and David McGary.

 

Bobbie Scogin Raye

March 15, 2014

Services for Bobbie Scogin Raye, 83, of Eupora were March 17 2014, at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Travis Gray and Jonathan McBride officiating. Burial was in Eupora City Cemetery.

Mrs. Raye was a homemaker and member of the Eupora First Baptist Church. She died March 15, 2014, at Golden Living Center-Eupora.

Survivors include her husband, Marlon E. “Bud” Raye of Eupora; two daughters, Susan McBride of Mathiston and Adonna Mitchell of Eupora; two sons, Mike Raye of Eupora and Stan Raye of Starkville; two sisters, Margaret Givens and Peggy Barnett of Eupora; a brother, J.L. “Jay” Scogin of Eupora; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Richard Faulkner, James Allen Givens, Jeffrey Givens, Jonathan McBride, Austin McIlwain, Dee McIlwain, Ryan Mitchell, Jim Palculiet, Jason Raye and Stephen Scogin.

Services for the Rev. Don Boren, 68, were March 24, 2014, at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel in Eupora with the Revs. Billy Trull, Jerrod Whittington and Byron Davis officiating. Burial was in Webster Memorial Gardens.

He was a retired minister and firefighter paramedic. The Rev. Boren was a member of Harmony Church in Eupora and a U.S. Air Force veteran. He died March 21, 2014, at his residence in Eupora.

Survivors include his wife, Jerri Boren of Eupora; his mother, Marie Spencer of New Site; two daughters, Deborah Bright of Eupora and Alecia Simpson of Philadelphia; two sons, Lester Boren of Houston and Stephen Boren of Stewart; two brothers, Larry Boren of Zion, Ill., and James Spencer of New Site; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Matthew Brown, Casey Dean, Lowell Hitt, Joe Huffman, Michael Peavy, John Paul Pritchett and Ty Stroup

Clarice Moore Duke, 90, of Eupora, MS, passed away March 19, 2014. Family and friends surrounded her in love and prayers. Born on December 12, 1923 in Webster County, MS; Mother to James Oliver Duke and wife Cathy; Grandmother to Gwen Duke Pinkerton, Wendy Duke Cole and Jennifer Duke; Great Grandmother to Dillon Duke Pinkerton, Clarice Vaughn Cole and Maggie Elizabeth Cole; Aunt to her beloved nephews and nieces. Also her very special friends Tony and Paula Bostic.

She was preceded in death by; her husband of over 50 years, Ralph Castle Duke, parents Nova and Edward Moore, brothers Leonard and Mozelle Moore and sister Bonnie Bryant.

Clarice was a member of The Fellowship Baptist Church in Bellefontaine, MS where she worshipped weekly and proudly accepted a flower for being the oldest mother in the congregation on Mother’s Day several years in a row.

A mother figure to everyone, she will be deeply missed.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Duke were Sunday March 23, 2014 at Fellowship Baptist Church in Bellefontaine, MS at 2:30 PM. Visitation was Sunday from 1:00PM until 2:30 PM at the church. Graveside services followed the service at North Union Cemetery. Wise-Reed Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Services for James Chester Rhodes of Millport, Ala., were March 24, 2014, at Welch Funeral Home in Maben with the Rev. Tommy Temple officiating. Burial was in Maben Memorial Garden.

The son of the late Walter and Ophi Rhodes, he was a retired truck dispatcher with CFC Universal Industries, an Army veteran of World War II and of the Baptist faith. Mr. Rhodes died March 20, 2014, at his residence.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Thompson Rhodes, originally of Maben; three daughters, Pam Hickman of Victorville, Calif., Debra Reed of Phoenix and Barbara Salas of Gulfport; four sons, James M. Rhodes of Columbus, Mitchell Rhodes of Atlanta, and Thomas Rhodes and Jason Rhodes of Millport; two sisters, Margie Bryant and Lucille Vandever; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren and numerous great great-grandchildren.

Services for Forrest Evans “Roy” Brooks, 66, of Denham Springs, La., were March 25, 2014, at Revival Temple in Walker, La., with the Revs. Wes Courtney, Carl Williams and Dan McMasters officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

A native of Chickasaw County, Mr. Brooks was a retired employee of Baton Rouge General. He died March 22, 2014.

Survivors include his wife, Theresa Dentro Brooks; three daughters, Stephanie Brooks, Antoinette McMasters and Tammy Carver; a son, Tony Brooks; three sisters, Paulette Box, June Johnson and Marylee Johnson; his stepfather, Paul Whitt of Eupora; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Rudell Whitt.

Pallbearers were Josh Brooks, Tommy Brooks, Phillip Johnson, Justin McMasters, Paul Teal and Tayton Teal.

Mr. Jerrel G. “Jerry” Elkins, 81, Retired U. S. Army Veteran and Utilities Investigator with the Mississippi Public Service Commission, died March 28th. 2014 at the North Ms. Medical Center in Eupora. Funeral Services were held 2:00PM Monday March 31st. 2014 at the Eupora First Baptist Church with burial in the Webster Memorial Garden Cemetery in Webster County with full military honors. Rev. Travis Gray officiated. Pallbearers were; Doug, Don, Steve and Mike Elkins, Ron and Ryan Wood, Honorary Pallbearers were; Harold and Cam Elkins, Steve and Kenny Wood, Lions Club, and Crusaders Sunday School Class. Jerry is survived by his wife; Barbara Wood Elkins, Eupora, Ms., two sons; Greg (Cynthia) Elkins, Vaiden, Ms. and David Elkins, Eupora, Ms., a sister; Sherry Pittman (Dan) Moreland, Starkville, Ms., four brothers; Hugh (Betty) Elkins, Haleyville, Al., Buddy (Ola) Pittman, Walthall, Ms., DuWayne (Ginger) Pittman, Crossett, Ar., and Robert Pittman, Mantee, Ms., four grandchildren; Lance Rowlen (Carla) Elkins, Cregg Bradley Elkins, Carrie Leigh (Eric) Hunt, and Hannah Beth Elkins, and four great grandchildren; Will Elkins, Parker Elkins, Maddox Hunt and Cayleigh Hunt. He was preceded in death by his parents; John Henry and Christine Morgan Elkins, and three brothers; John Elkins, James Elkins and M. H. Pittman. Jerry’s dedication to Christian ideals is reflected in his membership in the First Baptist Church of Eupora where he serves as a member of the Crusaders Sunday School Class. Jerry was educated at Eupora High School where he graduated in 1952, Holmes Junior College where he attended on a football scholarship, and at San Antonio College, Colorado State University, University of Maryland and the University of Virginia. His pledge to the liberty and justice of his Country is evidenced in his twenty-two years of military service in the United States Army, which included tours of Korea, Germany and Libya, and two tours of Vietnam, and receipt of the Meritorious Service Medal twice and the Bronze Star twice. Jerry’s commitment to excellence is reflected in the numerous positions of immense responsibility that have been bestowed upon him, such as civilian contractor, mobile home inspector and Consumer Complaint Specialist with the Mississippi Public service Commission from 1980 until 2000. His commitment to the Community of Eupora, Webster County, and the future of Mississippi is reflected in his membership in the Eupora Lions Club where he has served as President three times, his membership in the Eupora Country Club, where he has served as President of the Board, his membership in the Masons, the Shriners and the Royal Arch. Obituary – Ellen Denise Norris

Ellen Denise Norris, affectionately called “Beasley”, was the second child born to James C. Cork and Jo Ellen “Norris” Cork on March 12, 1974.

Her early years of education began in the public schools of Choctaw County. During her years as a student in Ackerman High School, she was part of the cheerleader team, student government, honor society, and other school activities, excelling in everything she participated in. After graduating from high school, she furthered her education at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss., where she received her BA, MBA in Accounting and later became a Certified Public Accountant. Ellen was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

At an early age, she united with Red Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Eupora, Miss. where she was taught biblical principles and came to know about salvation. After relocating to Memphis, she later joined and rededicated her life to Christ at The Life Church of Memphis under the leadership of Pastor John Siebeling. Ellen was employed at Baptist College of Health Sciences as a Director of Finance for the past several years.

Ellen transitioned from this life on Monday, March 24, 2014, when the angel of time met with the angel of eternity and ushered her from labor to reward from Baptist East Hospital, Memphis, Tenn., surrounded by her loved ones. She will be remembered as a vibrant woman of courage, a fighter, classy, having a radiant smile and possessing great strength.

She leaves to cherish her memories and celebrate her life: her parents, James C. Cork and Jo Ellen Cork; the highlight of her life and pet “Emmie” Norris; two devoted sisters: Daphne Ann Norris and Merlisa Rochelle Scott (Damon L. Scott, Sr.); four brothers: Derrick Beckom (Vickie A. Beckom), Tony Gaston, Robert D. Cork, James L. Cork; three nieces: Latyana Beckom, Mariah Beckom, Abbygail Gaston; three nephews: D’Onte Cork, Derrick Beckom, Jr., Lejamielle Beckom; a host of uncles, aunts, cousins, family and friends.

Ellen was preceded in death by her grandparents: Robert O. and Susie Cork, and Fred W. and Dollie M. Norris.

A memorial service was held March 29, 2014, at the Choctaw County Community Center at 2:00 p.m. with Apostle Pete McKinnis officiating. Pallbearers were LaMario McKinnis, Steve Triplett, Montez McKinnis, Steve Patterson, Derrick McKinley, and George Davidson. James Howard Cork, Fred Norris, Jr., William E. Norris, and Cephus Hervey served as honorary pallbearers. The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority served as flower bearers. Interment was at Red Hill Cemetery in Eupora.

He was born Sept. 18, 1940, in Embry to the late Luri and Lura Prescott. Mr. Prescott was a mechanic and a Baptist. He died April 1, 2014, at North Mississippi Medical Center-Eupora.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Prescott of Eupora; two daughters, Gail Prescott and Marie Prescott of Eupora; a sister, Peggy Pugh of Louisville; a brother, Winford Prescott of Louisville; and two grandchildren.

Warren Anthony Bourgeois, Jr., 50, passed away on April 10, 2014 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, MS. He was an Automotive Designer with B&B Trim Shop and was an avid car enthusiast. He was Salutatorian of the 1981 graduating class of Chalmette High School in Chalmette, La. and he received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of New Orleans, where he was on the Dean’s List. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Starkville, MS.

He was preceded in death by his father, Warren Anthony Bourgeois, Sr.

He is survived by his mother, Romma Bourgeois of Mathiston, MS; sister, Lisa Bourgeois Darce (David) of Mathiston, MS; two nieces, Kathleen LeBlanc (Cory) and Jennifer Darce; and great niece, Violet LeBlanc.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday, April 14, 2014 from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Starkville, MS, with the service immediately following. Father Lenin Vargas will conduct the service. Burial will be in Maben Memorial Gardens in Maben, MS.

Obituary – Mary Pauline Worrell

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Pauline Worrell, 95, of Weir, were held at 1 p.m., April 13, 2014at Coleman Funeral Home in Ackerman. Rev. Danny Irvin officiated. Burial followed in the Bear Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

A native of Choctaw and Attala Counties, Mrs. Worrell retired from the Choctaw County Medical Center. She was also a member of Weir Baptist Church. Mrs. Worrell died Friday, April 11, 2014 at Quince Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Memphis, Tenn.

Survivors include her son Robert D. Worrell (Nellie), one grandson and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to any organization for the benefit of stroke and dementia victims.

He is survived by his wife; Allison Eidson, Nesbit, Ms., a daughter; Claudia Dean Eidson, Nesbit, Ms., his mother; Helen Kennedy Eidson, Mathiston, Ms., a sister; Mary Ellen (Jay) Edge, Richmond, Tx., and a brother; Danny (Brenda) Eidson, Fairfield Bay Ar.. He was preceded in death by his father William Maloy “Bill” Eidson. Earl loved all things outdoors and enjoyed careers at Sportsman Warehouse and Avery Outdoor, following a long stint with law enforcement, which included Mississippi State University Police Dept. and Starkville Police Dept. where he was an officer, Oktibbeha County Hospital (director of security) and Sam’s Town (officer). He loved to cook and make his friends happy with food and was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of owning a restaurant when he opened PigOut Barbeque & Smokehouse in Nesbit in 2009. He was often known to give away his “secret” recipes and throw in extra samples. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. White; son, William H. White; parents Mildred B. and Charles (Bud) Carpenter; and siblings Charles, Willard, Lavonne, and Isthmal Carpenter, Guessner Starkey, and Athelene Haltom.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the visitation from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, west of Hammond, on Thursday, April 17, 2014 from 5:00 p.m. until the funeral service at 7:00 p.m. The graveside service will be held at Shady Grove Cemetery in Eupora, Mississippi on Friday, April 18, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. Dr. George Haile will officiate the services.

Mr. Robert Canterbury, 81, retired employee with Babcock & Wilcox Mfg., died 4/16/14 at his residence in Eupora, Ms. Funeral Services were held 11:00AM Friday 4/18/14 at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Wood Springs Cemetery in Choctaw County. Rev. Don Parish officiated. Pallbearers were; Brandon and Eric Hubbard, Clay Canterbury, Daniel Crowley, Chance Parish, Michael Johnson and Tyler Herring. Mr. Canterbury worked over 32 years at Babcock and Wilcox, was an Army Veteran, and a longtime member and Deacon at the Tomnolen Baptist Church. Robert is survived by his wife of 54 years; Gerry Dean Canterbury, Eupora, Ms., two daughters; Patricia (Danny) Hubbard, and Nancy (Lynn) Crowley both of Eupora, Ms., a son; David (Karen) Canterbury, Eupora, Ms., a sister; Betty (Johnny) Fason, Eupora, Ms., seven grandchildren; Keri Jo (Tyler) Herring, Clay Canterbury, Brandon (Amy) Hubbard, Eric Hubbard, Traci (Michael) Johnson, Daniel (Whitney) Crowley, and Tabitha (Chance) Parish, eight great grandchildren; Ella Canterbury, Parker Herring, Lauren Hubbard, Brady Johnson, Grayson Johnson, Olivia Crowley, Dan Weston Crowley, and Elizabeth Crowley. Oliver Funeral Home of Eupora was in charge of all arrangements.
